Well, gay people have adopted the rainbow symbol to represent themselves, as they're usually colorful and flamboyantly vibrant people.

However, the rainbow is used by many other groups, too. It's used by those who have Autism, some terminal illnesses, and even some foreign political groups. It's even used by many American and foreign corporations as logos. Take for example, NBC studios' rainbow colored peacock.

The rainbow "icon"/logo/symbol only means that you're special, unique, vibrant, sometimes colorful, and that you represent a whole other faction of human beings... especially those who are compassionate, hopeful, optimistic, caring, and etc.

If you were to wear rainbow earings and if some poor, uneducated fool was to call you out and point out your earings and call you gay... so what? Who cares. You don't have to hate something because you don't agree with what it SYMBOLIZES. If you like the earings because you just DO, then wear 'em! F*ck what other people think! :-p

You're your own person and if you think that it looks fantastic, then wear them. But I'll tell you honestly... sure- the rainbow is a symbol often associated with gay people. But hey- like I said. Gay people aren't the only ones who use it. It's just that there's more gay people out there than there are those who are autistic, and etc.

The rainbow thing took first took hold as a symbol for the gay community after the death of the biggest gay culture icon Judy Garland. Two weeks after her burial the Stonewall Riots happened, marking the beginning of the gay rights movement. Since Garland has passed on and her gay cult classic film "The Wizard of Oz" was still being shown every year on television, the rainbow was simultaneously becoming a symbol for homosexual unity and a derisive slur from homophobes. By the 1980's, the rainbow, the triangle, and the Greek Lambda were all universally accepted symbols of the gay rights movement.

That's the official meaning of the rainbow in gay culture...

And then, there's what I think...

Quite frankly, the whole rainbow theme thing was a big mistake from the late 70's which would have been stopped instantly were it not for all the cheap marijuana, cocaine, disco music and poppers. In all honesty, I'm not convinced that it wasn't some kind of joke that got out of hand. You know...some old disco queen gets stopped on the street and asked by some newspaper reporter "hey, what's the symbol of the gay pride movement?" And the queen laughingly replies "Why, the rainbow of course," knowing full well that nobody looks good in rainbow-colored stripes, it is impossible to decorate around a rainbow motif without looking silly, and how can you possibly take any movement seriously that can't even decide on one or two basic colors!

How can rainbow mean gay? Have you seen those beautiful arches in the sky? Doesn't it make your heart leap at the sight? Do you really believe the clouds, or whatever else is up there, are 'gay' and therefore the rainbow exists? Come on now!
Rainbows are things of beauty, and if you choose to wear rainbow earrings, enjoy them!
And if that offends someone, it's THEIR problem, not yours!

The rainbow is a symbol of hope. It has also become a symbol for gay, lesbian, and bi pride, so they often wear rainbow jewelry.

It's not offensive if you don't want it to be. Anybody straight or not so straight can wear rainbow jewelry, you just might have to tell a girl that hits on you that you're into guys.

The rainbow means "Over the Rainbow" like Judy Garland's song form The Wizard of OZ.

I acknowledge that some people just like rainbows. But if I see a stranger wearing rainbow earrings, I admit I'd probably assume you were GLBT. Depends on the individual person who sees you.

It is the symbol of the (gay, lesbian, transgendered) movement, so it would be understandable if someone thought you were gay for wearing rainbow colored earings. It's like wearing the american flag, and people asking you if you're american. Logically speaking, you should be american if your wearing an american flag.

So if you don't want people to think your gay, don't wear the gay flag on your ears.

They say that it means gay. But to me it never will. The rainbow is a sign from God. Not a gay sign.
