I have the opportunity to buy a 21 year old vintage, almost, Olds Calais coupe for $3,500.00. It only has 24k miles on it because a little old lady (seriously) didn't drive it much in 21 years. The radio/tape deck doesn't work, and it has the original tires. It also has a 6 cyl engine, so not sure of the gas mileage yet. I love older cars, and this one is real cute, but I don't want to make a mistake! I checked it out at www.kellybluebook.com, and top asking price is $2,000.00. Is it a good deal, or too much money? It is one of a kind.

Nani:
I think that is really too much for a 21 yr old car, even with low miles. You'd probably get about 17-21 mpg, but remember those older cars didn;t handle as well, and were no where near as safe as a modern car (even a smaller one). The goo dnews is that it's front wheel drive so it would be good in bad weather. 21 yr old tires will need to be replaced, because they are dangerous due to dry rot -- so that's another $450.

It would be worth it to pay someone to thoroughly check it over- $3500 sounds fair if it's truly in top shape.
I bought a 20 yr old caddy and wound up spending a ton because I didn't know it had been sitting outside for so long and all the lines had frozen up and deteriorated.

mistake I'm afraid...go by the blue book by all means, whatever car you chose to buy. 35K is just too much for a 21-yr old car in my opinion, unless it were totally on top, which it sounds like it isn't (tape deck doesn't work, has original 21 yr-old tires which will need to be replaced)

well sounds like u r temped, obviously. but u said the KBB value is 2K and u r getting it for 3.5K
I guess that kinda answers it, doesnt it. I mean to me it sounds a little expensive plus if u r not gonna drive too much its kool, but if u r then well u know what the gas prises are these days :) so good luck.

Take it to your mechanic and have it checked out. If he says it's cool, then go for it. Ask him or her what it's worth. The bottom line is: what is the car worth to you, not the industry blue book, not your friends, not the mechanics. If the old car is worth 3.5k to you, then give it up. If not say phewwey to the bluehair.
