The universe is "THE WHOLE THING", everything that exists.
This means that my brain which is only a tiny part of the whole thing is trying to think about something much bigger than itself, so it is not surprising if it makes a bit of a mess of it.
Scientifically, the universe is all space, everything it contains, and everything that happens in it. It is the space time continuum, plus all the energy and matter it contains.
There are theoretical, philosphical, religious......speculations about the universe, and whether it is, for example, just one of several members of some larger meg/multiverse. These can probably never be proved one way or another.
If you want to know what the universe actually is, as opposed to what the word "universe" means, there is no answer(as yet). But we are trying to get there.
That is one of the weird things. Why do human beings ask such questions?

That is the oldest and biggest question of them all. Is there an answer? That is the problem. The universe seems to be an enormous whopping great big huge blob of nothing with lots and lots of stuff in it. How old is another problem but the brainiacs who pretend to know the answer say it is about 15 billion years old. At least that is when they say this one exploded into existence.
It all began with a dot that was of infinite density and was very very small and that went "pop" and everything came gushing out of that dot. Weird hey?
I personally believe there are many universes and there have been many dots and that the whole business is just part of many cycles within cycles, etc. etc..
The size of the universe is just too big to describe - it is HUUUUUGE..... infinity minus one.... aproximately.
But what is it? I think it might be the mind of god - if there is such a thing. We are living in god's brain. EEEEK!!!!

I will try to answer you question of 'what it is' by comparison:
Imagine that you have a huge goldfish bowl in front of you - how big does not matter. The bowl is filled to the brim with water. You can see, in the water, lots of tiny specs floating around.
The goldfish bowl represent the Universe (how large does not matter)
The water inside the bowl represents the 'ether' or composition of the Universe, which is a vacuum - a nothing-ness.
The tiny specs you see floating in the water are the galaxies, the distant star systems such as Andromeda, etc. Each galaxy comprises myriads of solar systems of one or more suns, and each solar system is made up of its sun (or star) or suns, its planets, asteroids, meteor showers, gas clouds, etc.. Our Sun is the centre of our own solar system of which Earth is the only inhabited planet (or so we believe). You will note that all of this is crammed into each little spec.
So there you have it - non-technically - the Universe, bigger that the imagination can understand. As to it's expanding nature you must imagine that the goldfish bowl does not exist, only the water in it, and that body of water is increasing in size at the rate of millions of miles per second. No one 'knows' the true extent of the Universe - scientists can only best-guess that. That it exists should be enough, but Man being the most curious of all creatures, is trying his best to determine the size, age and limits of the Universe - but probably never will.

The universe is everything.
When people talk about stuff outside the universe, they're mistaken. Anything anywhere is part of the universe - that's the whole point of having the word!
Tigger, you're the one putting someone down for no reason. Think about sad lives again.

It's going to be hard to find an authoritative answer to your question since by definition, anyone who tries to answer it (obviously including me) is only a tiny part of said universe. Metaphysically speaking, at least from my point of view, Universe is everything created by Supreme(God) after God came into being or further created by one of Supreme's creations. One thing that is NOT Universe would be The Void, or that which was there (without existing) BEFORE Supreme existed.

Science today says our Universe is at least 13.7 billion years old.
This is based on rigorous astrological research. Deep space stuff and all that.
Some say our Universe is so big it cannot be measured.
Our Universe is the 'space' where our small Planet exists.
Our Planet is where you live on it's surface in a tiny Solar System within the Milky Way galaxy.
Imagine this, Bubbles within bubbles, within bubbles to Infinity.

dictionary jim's comment seems to sum it up ok, but there is a conflict between this and the current opinion of physical astronomers......
if, as they claim, the universe is expanding, it must be expanding INTO something; it cannot thus be the extent of everything that exists.
if it is true, then the question "where IS the universe?" can potentially be answered.
