expert means that your are knowledgeble of the subject that you are and expert of. You don't have to go to college to be an expert. You can be an expert on hacking computer without going to college, you can be a expert on skatboarding without a college degree. You just have to be knowledgeble. No one knows everything.

To be an expert, all you need is for someone else to refer to you as one, preferably someone who has a large audience. There have been uncounted numbers of 'experts' who have stated facts based on their expertise. The world in general has excepted these 'facts' for years, only to toss these facts aside when another expert comes along with a new fact. A good example would be the Food Pyramid. I believe it was recently changed again. Apparently the previous experts are no longer experts. I know what I am talking about, so, if anyone asks you, you can tell them your question was answered by JJ Car, Question And Answer Expert!

If it's in relation to an academic field, like sociology for example, probably being an expert would entail having a Ph.D in the subject, or a master's. For anything else... years and years of experience backed up by a lot of knowledge.

Basically, I wouldn't call myself an expert on anything unless I *know* I'm qualified -- and to me, that requires lots of experience and study.
