When I did a search I looked on Wikipedia and the definitions are the same, they are Lebenese militant political party with the main goal of destroying Isreal, so I'm confused as to why the names are different, the way the news covers it they make it sound like one of them is the name of the groups leader.

Hamas isn't a Lebanese faction like Hezbollah, it's Palestinian. Hamas is also Sunni while Hezbollah is Shiite. Hezbollah is also a lot better trained and armed, and is supported by Syria and Iran.

Hamas are Palestinian Sunnis, whereas Hezbollah are Lebanese Shiites. This is going to be a very brief and uninformative answer, so my apologies, but they are two different groups with different goals, different leaderships, different methods, etc. Just because they both want to destroy Israel does not mean they are the same thing. They may want different things done with the land that Israel sits on, have different opinions on foreign aid, biological warfare, all sorts of things. I don't have the precise answer, but I urge you to reread the Wikipedia articles more in depth and do some searches on the Internet. Let me know what you find.

Hamas: http://www.cfr.org/publication/8968/#1

Hamas is the largest and most influential Palestinian militant movement. In January 2006, the group won the Palestinian Authority's (PA) general legislative elections, defeating Fatah, the party of the PA's president, Mahmoud Abbas, and setting the stage for a power struggle. Since attaining power, Hamas has continued its refusal to recognize the state of Israel, leading to crippling economic sanctions. Hamas maintained a cease-fire brokered in March 2005 until June 9, 2006, when it ended the truce after reports that errant Israeli shell killed several civilians on a Gaza beach. The Israeli Defense Forces later denied responsibility for the deaths.

Hezbollah: http://www.cfr.org/publication/9155/#1

Hezbollah is a Lebanese umbrella organization of radical Islamic Shiite groups and organizations. It opposes the West, seeks to create a Muslim fundamentalist state modeled on Iran, and is a bitter foe of Israel. Hezbollah, whose name means “party of God,” is a terrorist group believed responsible for nearly 200 attacks since 1982 that have killed more than 800 people. Experts say Hezbollah is also a significant force in Lebanon’s politics and a major provider of social services, operating schools, hospitals, and agricultural services, for thousands of Lebanese Shiites. It also operates the al-Manar satellite television channel and broadcast station.

Kind of like the differences between 2 political parties. I hesitate to use Democrats and Republicans but here goes. Both parties believe in democracy however, they have differences in opinion on the best way that democracy should be administered.

HAMAS and Hezbollah both believe in a Theocratic form of government but they differ in strategies on how that theocracy should be administered.

Hamas = Democratically elected Palestinian government. Al Quaida = Terrorist organisation, in my opinion. Hezbollah = Political organisation and military structure who fought the illegal Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon (they didn't exist before Israels invasion - they were a reaction to Israel) Taliban = Former ruling organisation of Afghanistan, fundamentalist, extremist. Resurgent in Afghanistan.
