A pelvic exam is performed to evaluate the female reproductive tract that includes the vagina, cervix, uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes. A medical professional, usually a nurse or a doctor, will examine the vaginal area and perform a Pap smear to check for signs of cancer, infection or other problems.
First, a metal or plastic speculum (a duckbill shaped instrument) will be inserted into the vagina to open the area for a visual inspection and a Pap smear test. To complete the Pap smear, a cotton swab or small bottlebrush is used to scrape and collect a few cells from the cervix (opening to the uterus). The cell sample is then sent to a laboratory for microscopic examination to determine whether they are normal or abnormal. Most patients can expect results in 1-3 weeks.
Next, the medical professional will check the ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus by putting two gloved, lubricated fingers inside the uterus while pressure is applied from the outside, on the abdomen, with the other hand. This procedure will check for any abnormal lumps or tenderness.
The entire pelvic examination only takes a few minutes, and while it can be uncomfortable, it is not painful. All women who are sexually active or over 18 should have a pelvic exam and Pap smear each year.
