Looking to start a band and I know that it is very important to put yourself in writing songs, but what attributes to a good song to do you listen for. Not looking to wirte one hit wonders, or to make a million dollars, just make to make my music enjoyable, and your input would help!

Thanks!

It's all about the hook, Baby!!!!!!!!
The song has got to have an instantly recognizable phrase that keeps you thinking about it.
Make a list of your 5/10/50 favorite songs, and then go down the list humming a part from it. THAT is the hook. That memorable part that you can hum when it isn't playing.

Oddly enough, lyrics aren't a major factor, as Def Leppard showed in their song Por Some Sugar On Me...
"Living like a bomb, baby come and get it on/ living like a lover with a radar phone..." WHAT IN THE NAME OF THOR'S HOLY HAMMER DOES THAT MEAN?????
Make the music memorable, and make the over all meaning of the song something YOU caqn relate to. If you know what you are writing, and it means something to you, then it has truth to it, and the audience can feel that. If you are mearly going through the motions, then don't even bother. The audience can sense BS 3 measures into the song.

A strong melodic hook.
Intricate yet melodic guitar work -- INCLUDING a minimally memorable guitar solo (gasp -- what's that???)
Killer, soaring vocals -- i.e., you must have a 'range'.
Hard rock - that magical "energy" that comes with a heavy-ended song. The kind that reaches into your gut and lifts you up, and even does to some extent on ballads. It has to pick you up and carry you with it.

Good hard rock song. (sigh) BLESS YOU for having some musical taste!!

There has to be a kick-a** base line. The bass gives you the whole beat to the song.
