Go to Taos, New Mexico or Rocky Pointe. Check out http://www.tripadvisor.com for reviews on hotels and things to do in the destination you choose.

Ken W had the best answer so far...the others seem to be confused where southern Arizona is. *roll eyes*

Tombstone is a good family suggestion...though it's kind of a tourist trap a bit hokey. The elevation is a little bit higher there but it will still be pretty warm/hot. Bisbee is a funky little town south of Tombstone that is fun to walk around...the Queen Mine tour would be fun for the kids (and the adults too).

To get away from the intense desert heat, I suggest Chiricahua National Monument (link below), a fairlyland of forest and rock formations that is sure to be a fun place for the kids. (The elevation is 7000 feet so it is much cooler there.) If you are camping they have a very nice campground.

Oh yeah, if you are staying in Tucson and really need to get out of the heat, take a drive up Mount Lemmon...it will be almost 30 degrees cooler at the top. The Mount Lemmon Cafe in Summerhaven has good homemade pie...and the general store down the road has excellent fudge.

In the Tucson area, you can go west on Speedway Blvd. off of I-10 over Grants Pass to see Old Tucson (where many Westerns were filmed) and the Sonoran Desert Museum, where you can see various desert flora and fauna in its natural habitat. South of Tucson, theres a original Spanish mission and a Titan Missile silo to tour.
Southeast of Tucson on I-10 about an hour and a half is Tombstone, where you can walk the streets of an Old West town that includes the OK Corral, Boot Hill and the streets where Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday once roamed.

That is the worst time to visit the Phoenix area, as it is way too hot to do any outdoor activity. Some indoor suggestions are The Arizona Science Center and The Heard Museum. There are a couple of water parks, but they are expensive.

I live in Colorado, almost moved to Arizona, and would recommend going to the sand dunes. The don't cost a fortune, and they're super fun!

you can drive to the Grand Canyon. If you don't like to camp, Flagstaff has many affordable Motels/Hotels.
