I read that if you tip the person that checks you in when you arrive at your hotel in Las Vegas they will be more inclined to upgrade your room for free. Is this true? If so, when exactly do you tip (obviously before they assign your room) & how much??? How do you go about doing it without looking awkward & dumb???

Not anymore. What actually works best is to talk to them. be nice. Its all computerized and at 90% occupancy, the good rooms are saved for the gold, diamond and other color casino card members.

Getting a good line of credit or a casino host... THAT works

But tip heavy for bellmen, food servers and valet... You will get better service and the word spreads fast either way.

Actually, Yes!!! A $20 Bill in many cases will get you a upgrade. You won't go from a room to a suite or anything, but you can get a slight upgrade in some cases. There are many variables, the most important is how full the hotel is during your stay. If a hotel is sold out, you will not get an upgrade, but if the hotel has tons of open rooms, your chances are much better. The mood of the agent, and type of hotel also have an effect. The less expensive the hotel, the better your odds, in most cases.

No. Tipping at check in doesn't get you an upgrade. Rooms are assigned prior to check in and often by a computer. HOWEVER, if you want an upgrade or something special, call the hotel directly and ask for the fax number and the name of the front desk manager. Then send the front desk manager a nice fax asking for the upgrade - it also helps if you're going for a special occasion. The worst they can tell you is they don't have it available.

I never had to tip them, but I guess that would work.
