Wikipedia says:
"The origin of the term comes from pickpocket slang of the late 19th and early 20th century. The "kick" is the front side pocket of a pair of trousers, and was found to be the safest pocket from thieves. Thus the "side-kick" became an inseparable companion."

So Dr. Watson to Sherlock Holmes, Sancho Panza to Don Quixote, Kato to the Green Hornet, and Robin to Batman (in declining order of inseperability).

Side kick comes from the scenario were theres a partnership between two people and one being the weaker one and one the stronger. So the stronger one will be the one doing the kicking. And the side bit comes from the fact partners are always side by side
