In some places they naturally live outdoors." Like in your yard in the grass", and if you live near the woods in a warm climate. People in those climates gave them the name " Palmetto Bug " because they naturally subside in the Palmetto bush, and mostly because the people in those climates were ashamed to call them cockroaches. They are the big ones that fly for short distances and travel through sewer lines, also known as sewer roaches.
On the other hand, there are many other kinds of roaches, particularly the most common is the German cockroach. They will live in both extreme cold and heat. They are the ones that will live through a nuclear Holocaust. They are small and thinner than the other roaches, but the most dominate. German roaches " I don't know why they call them that " but, locate by many ways, including : Borrowed or bought items from other places like: clothing, appliances, and other items. Other instances are bringing them home from your grocery store, take out food, and even a newspaper delivered to you door.
My advice would be to identify what kind it is, and how many you have seen, and take it from there. Usually in certain circumstances, if you see one it's not a problem. If you see two it is. If more than that call an exterminator.

There is no such thing as "a" cockroach; They say for every one you see there are ten to a hundred you don(t see. No matter how clean you are you can bring them in from any store or even their eggs (which you can*t see) and when they hatch you *ve got a problem. Get an exterminator if you can afford it. If not go to Wal Mart and get some really strong but killer (like Raid or Hot Shot Fogger) After spraying , do it again in about 6 weeks to kill the little Hatcher Outers. Good Luck.

Maybe you have only seen one-but that doesn't mean there aren't more. And, it has nothing to do with how clean your house is. It could have come from your neighbors if they exterminated-or from a paper bag, old newspapers. Cock roaches love dampness. Make sure you don't have any leaks.
Also, roaches leave behind a "scent" when they crawl around, this let others know to also go there. It may sound crazy, but it's true. My mother bought some things from a yard sale and they were hidden in the cracks of the shelves. I did lots of research on this to help her. Some people say that boric acid doesn't work-but it does. The way to make it more effective is to add some powder sugar in it. This will actually makes it more potent, then roaches it back to the others. Kill the ones you see-an adult roach can have as many as 200 babies and they mature really quickly!!! Take the mixture of boric acid with the sugar-pour in into cracks and crevices. You could use something like a small paintbrush (like you do paint by numbers with) this will help get it into the cracks. Or you could make a paste with it-roll it into small balls and put them behind your appliances. Be sure you put it everywhere.
Another method I saw on a tv show is to add some tobasco sauce with water. Add only a LITTLE of the tobasco because it could stain if you use too much.
I personally wouldn't like the odor of the exterminator or the residue it would leave behind. Just because you get an exterminator to come, it doesn't mean that it kills of all of them at one time-they have to make repeated visits. Just as you may kave to keep using the boric acid mixture for awhile. Make sure you reapply often. It may seem like a lot of trouble, but with time, they will be gone.
If you happen to use a bomb-keep in mind to be sure to use enough to cover your entire house-not just one room. All that would do is make the others go other places in your home. I think the boric acid method is easier-you don't have to put away all your things, there is no residue to have to wipe off. I guess it's all a matter of personal preference.
Finally, it may not be a roach-it could be water bugs, they too, like dampness.

The cleanest house on the planet can have cockroaches. Don't blame the kids or your neighbor! It could have been hiding in a cardboard box, in your groceries, in a paper bag, or just come in from outside. If you just have one, you're lucky. Or - maybe it's not a cockroach at all.

Rats and mice have the flexibility to dislocate each bone of their body. they can easily squeeze themselves lower than a door, you recognize the gap between the bottom of the door and the floor, via cracks on your roof or beginning (they could also climb walls). So i'd examine the exterior of your position and fill ALL cracks and holes, no count how small. i'm not an expert, yet you need to purchase that increasing insulating foam for all the cracks you need to discover outdoors. You interior sight ironmongery shop can likely inform you larger about that stuff. i lately study a narrative on CNN's information superhighway website about a bat difficulty in Georgia and bats can easily squeeze themselves via a hollow the dimensions of a dime. So do not underestimate rodents.

Live in a rowhouse or some sort of home where you're connected to your neighbors? It could have come from them.
If not, the roach should see that your home is clean and wander off to a dirtier one.
(EDIT- Just remember to keep your home clean, as roaches tend to not appear when it is.)

Depends on where you live, it may be a tree (wood) roach and it just got in, it is not interested in your foods, it will die if it don't get back out. Some places there going to be there anyway and you have to put out traps or poisons. If you live in an apartment, they come from other apartments! One dirty person moves out and here they come, looking for a new place.... They will come thru very small cracks in walls too!!!!!!
Good Luck.

They can enter your home through a variety of sneaky ways. Maybe it was in a bag from a store on in a box that you brought home.
The main thing is to kill any you find before they have time to reproduce. Good luck!
This website shows pictures so you can identify the type you have & also tells how to get rid of them.
