In the past couple years, I've had the engine gasket replace, a complete new cooling system, tune-ups, oil changes, etc. I just finished a tune-up and now it doesn't want to start in the morning.

Before I go ahead and spend $150 on a battery, I thought it might be a good idea to put it out there rather than get myself snookered.

Symptoms: Once it starts it's ok for a couple days. Tries to turnover but didn't quite make it this morning and I had to get someone to pick me up (no busses go to my work). It makes a connection, tries to turn over but doesn't make it. When I went back at lunch and tried it, it turned over really rough, and then smelled like gas. It's an automatic, so I don't touch the gas when I start it.

Other items recently replaced: distributer cap, rotor, leads, sparkplugs, fuel filter, air filter, cables to battery cleaned, oil change.

you can get a battery at a parts store for alot less and they will install it for free. Those toilet's always had problems with battery cable connections so check those first (clean & tight) if so buy a battery. If it cranks to slow it will load the engine with gas hence the smell.

Sounds like a fuel problem. Check the cold start relay. If its turning over the battery should be OK. However if the starter or battery have weak spots in them it could cause these problems. Do a load test on the battery first to see if it has enough reserve power to start when cold. Also it could be a bad ground. VW has had some problems with poor grounds. Have someone check those and make sure there is good contact.
