dpends on the sound you're looking for. a distorted bass often sounds like a guitar with lots of lows. i'd say give it a try and see what you like. that's the only way to really find out if it'll work or not

That actually depends on the type of music, and what the song asks for.
I am a heavy metal bassist, and I play several different forms of metal, from Queensryche to Iron Maiden, to Metallica to Motorhead. Lemmy plays with massive amounts of distortion, so that is required when playing a Motorhead tune. When I am playing Queensryche, or Iron Maiden, I usually drop a hint of distortion in it... just enough to give it some bite, but not enough to make it hyper noticable. When I am doing Metallica, Megadeth, or most of the others, I don't use any (except for the intro to FOr Whom The Bell Tolls) and it sounds great.

Having distortion is a great weapon to have in your arsenal, as long as you don't fight every battle with it.

It doesn't really matter. What matters is how you and your band want it to sound. If it helps to express your artistic vision, use the distorted bass. Don't use it just because other people say you should. Use it only if it feels right to you. It's your band, not anybody else's (except for the other guys in the band).

I've always thought a distorted bass tone to be good for certain things like short parts where it would stand out , but not for a whole song.

I've been playing bass and guitar for about 10 years. and I say do what sounds right, play the song once with it distorted and play it once with it clean.
hell, experiment with different distortions, The Rat distortion pedal by Pro Co is a great one.

I'm sure it depends on what you like-generally the guitars are distorted enough, the bass should be clean

it depends on what type of metal and what type of bass. and guitars are distorted enough... the bass should have a powerfull, but clean sound.
