Jack Twist was not murdered.
He was killed in the accident as Lureen explained on the phone.
Ennis was terrified of being murdered because of what he had witnessed as a child, when his father forced him to look at the murdered and mutilated corpse of a gay man in his town.
The murder scene is a flashback and is in Ennis's mind.
Also in the short story Annie Proulx, storyteller, author and narrator says: "Ennis didn't hear about the accident until six months after . . . "
All further references to a murder scenario are in Ennis's mind and due to his fear. Ennis can't have known anything. It was 1983 when Jack died. In a town/city where he and his wife were well known. A murder would not have been covered up.
Also, Ennis imagines a murder in exactly the same way as Earl, his gay neighbor was killed in 1951 ie with a tire iron.
Highly improbable two murders would happen in exactly the same way.
Conclusion: Annie Proulx artfully veils the truth by showing us Ennis's vivid imagination and his inner conviction that Jack was murdered.
He wasn't. He died in an accident.

that's pretty smart thinking. i never knew that. who knows? maybe it happened like that and his wife just said he got killed by some truck or something like that but then they show some gay bashers beating him up. i think there could have been a chance Jack could have been killed by some guys who his father-in-law sent 2 get rid of him.

I never thought of that but that does make sense. I thought it was just because he was attacked by some random gay bashers.

It could have been but it could also have been his wife. Because she knew what was going on. But never said anything.
