AUSTRALIA qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals thru an intercontinental playoff against South American team that finished 5th in the group, that is URUGUAY. AUSTRALIA prevail thru the two legged play-off & beat them 4-2 on penalties after both teams registered a 1-0 win.

(after extra time, full time 1-0, Australia won 4-2 on penalties)
AUSTRALIA has since resigned from OFC (Oceania Football Confederations) & joined AFC (Asian Football Confederations) in January 2006. they will compete in the Asian Zone for the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

They just changed regions after this World Cup they are in the Aisan confederation, short term it will be more difficult for them, since they only major competition in the Oceania region was New Zealand, now they will face some tougher competion in qualifying. I believe the region uses a 3 phase qualifying with double round robins (home and away vs. everyone else in the group) in each phase

Wonder if Oceania now loses its playoff spot for WC qualifying, without Australia in the mix. Guess time will tell if New Zealand decides to join the AFC as well.
