Three guys check-into their last chance for a room for the night to attend a convention. The clerk tells them there is only one room left and it has twin beds but that he is willing to provide a roll-away bed, cost: Thirty dollars. They take it.
Later, the mgr sends bellman to room with $5.00 refund and apology for inconvenience.
Bellman pockets $2.00 (They stiffed him when checking-in!) thinking three into five doesn't compute anyway to ameliorate his conscience.
Each guy originally paid $10.00= $30.00. After refund $9.00 each =$27.00. Bellman got $2.00
$27.00 + $2.00 = $29.00...Where did the other dollar go that made the original transaction total $30.00?

Ack! Not this old one. They paid $27, *less* the $2 bellman took. That's the $25 that the room cost.

Wikipedia has a whole article on this that you can read. Basically it comes down to trying to confuse people with math by incorrectly adding $2 to $27 trying to get $30, rather than subtracting $2 from $27 to get $25.

Plus this question has been asked a bazillion times here before, if you just look for it.

The dollar isn't missing, is the way the problem is explained which "looses" the dollar.

30 - 5 = 25, But Bellman take 2 dollars "as a tip" and that makes 25+2 = 27 and that's the final cost of the room
so "After refund $9.00 each =$27.00."

27 = 27 the equation is solved, there is no dollar lost
I think my explanation is even worst than the question LOL

So at the end...they each have $1..therefore $3, the bellman $2 and the manager $25...which adds up to $30.

Or they each paid $9 for the room therefore $27...25 to the manager and 2 to the bellman...

The answer is you subtract the $2 the bellboy kept not add it:
$27 - $2 = $25 + $5(refund) = $30
