I'm not taking any online courses. But if I did, I would think I would learn from others' feedback.

I can tell you that in my online classes, I use the discussions as a way to provide a "classroom feel" to it. It's a way for them to interact with their fellow classmates. This allows them to see other points of view and gives me some sense of their thinking process.
