Get a step ladder, some tape and spackle and apply some spackle around the hole. Then cut pieces of tape over the hole, scrape evenly , let dry and then smooth out edges with sand paper. good luck

Easy way: Go into your attic and seal off the hole from that side. Then apply spackle in small amounts and let dry in between patches and slowly build area back up. Sand and paint.
Better way: Cut new pieces to fit holes as best as possible (doesn't have to be exact). Have someone hold patch piece in hole while someone else tapes down in attic (or attach patch to piece of slat wood that is wider then hole. work up into hole so slat holds board in place. go into attic and tape slat to keep in place through rest of repair). Fill cracks around repair piece with spackle. Sand and paint.

if holes were made by fist don't make em in the first place and then you wouldn't have to spend money fixing them

There is an adhesive back metal patch plate available at Home Depot and Lowes that you apply over the hole. then mud over it and finish.
