My computer freezes when I first login. I use Windows XP, and I have a Dell.

When I press my username, then enter the password, it will freeze up. It's kind of hard to explain.

I enter my password, then my desktop comes up with all the shortcuts and etc. After some screens pop up (like AIM, Xfire, MSN), it freezes up. The screen is still there, but I can't move my mouse or CTRL-ALT-DEL. Does anyone know the problem? It does not freeze when I go into safe mode.

I think this started when I plugged in a new microphone for computer game communication. I unplugged it now, and it still freezes. Help! I don't want my precious computer to die!

P.S: I'm typing from my brother's laptop.

Start XP in save mode. Start 'msconfig.exe'.
Go to the startup tab. Disable everything. Reboot. See if it helped. If so, you know where to look. If not, open up your PC. Re-insert all the components. If it doesn't help: download and install (in safe mode if neccesary) the newest drivers for each component (motherboard, chipset, videocard, etc.
Other possibility: check CPU temperature (go to BIOS at startup), install W2K of W2K3 and see if it helps (if not: could be broken hardware ).

Can you run your antivirus and/or antispyware programs from Safe Mode? If so, I *highly* recommend that you do those scans, in case you have a malware program that is messing with your startup.

Also, if you can get into Safe Mode, which you say you can, get in there: then go to Start, then Run, then type in msconfig. Click the Startup tab. Uncheck any programs that you don't need to have started up automatically when you log on. Your startup may be freezing because it is overloaded with too many tasks. Especially uncheck anything having to do with that microphone, since that is coincidental with your problem.

If this doesn't fix your problem, add more details. I'll put this question on my watch list and see how you are progressing in fixing this problem.

Sounds like one of the many programs you have set to open when Windows starts is conflicting with another problem. AIM and MSN would be the first thing I would check. Disable all those programs you do not need to load at startup, so they do not load on startup. If you have no freeze up, then you know it is one (or more) of those programs. Enable them one by one to find out which is causing the problem.

In your case i would boot up the computer in safe mode, and then enter your AIM, XFire, and MSN settings, and make them NOT start up when the computer turns on. Those prgrams maybe using up a large percentage of your processors power, and RAM. That maybe leaving a small ammount left for your computer to start up, and therefore it freezes.

You could have a virus. Everyone I know who uses AIM gets so many viruses it's not even funny. If you cant scan your computer, you're going to have to take it somebody who can remove viruses. It happened to my daughter, same thing and she had thousands of viruses from AIM. You could also reformat but you'll lose all your stuff unfortunately. I could be wrong but it sounds like the exact same thing that happened to my daughters computer, also a dell with XP.

Log in under safe mode and run a system restore to a date prior to you installing the microphone.

It sounds like you have a bunch of things running at startup and grabbing their piece of your memory. If you don't have much RAM installed it may not be frozen, just trying to keep up. When it seems to be frozen is there activity on the hard drive LED?

Ok, first things first.

Relax.

Relaxed? Good. Now you can think.

Hit F8 and select "last known good configuration".

If that doesn't work, run chkdsk. To do this, you boot in safe mode and select ms-dos or command prompt.

If CHKDSK is fine, then I suggest you re-install your os. It's not too long. Then reinstall your software.

Im a computer person. i build them and find out problems to do with computers too. the problem seems to be that you either have too many things loaded onto your computer, your computer has a virus and you dont have your firewall up, or that its the new computer game. its either one of those or there's something wrong with your mother-board inside the computer.
