College really seems like the new high school. Anyone can do it. You would have to be an absolute idiot not to do it. I think masters work is now equivalent to what a regular college degree used to be.

Sure, we have more degree holders, now, but that doesn't represent a more educated population.

I don't think the problem is that too many students are allowed to graduate; I think it starts with admitting students with less education than would have been accepted in decades past.

Proof: the appearance of remedial courses at University in English, Math, and other basic courses that H.S. students should have completed before college; now, they can just move into college and complete their H.S. education on campus.

I'm all grumpy and depressed, now.

It's a combination of factors. The GI Bill opened up colleges and universities to soldiers who probably would never have had the opportunity to go to school. Additionally, we've become a more affluent society. Most people my generation, I'm 22, have never had to share a room. Our houses are bigger than those our parents were raised in and have less people living in them.
We also have a larger population. The second baby boom so to speak has just entered college.
So, due to the fact there are so many BAs out there, it is no longer a distinguishing factor. Despite this fact, a person is far better off getting a BA or BS than not going at all.

I don't think "too many" graduate. I have a lot of friends who did well to finish highschool. I'm currently working on my masters from a state university and I'm glad to have had the opportunity.

To graduate, well, that depends on the colloge/university. However to do well, and by that I mean CONSISTENTLY appear on the Dean's List, then you do have to use a lot of brain power as well as hard work; not everyone can do that.

It's not up to America to graduate folks, but up to individual colleges and universities...you'd have to research the different universities in order to find your answer.

i think it's good that we have a more educated society now, but you are right...a BA doesnt mean much anymore b/c of it...but at least on a whole, we are better educated than we were years ago
