I know they both can lead to skin cancer, but which one is the lesser of the two evils? How do you know?

Tanning beds.
The UV rays from them are much more harmful because they are designed to give you a tan in a much shorter time.
Also, many people don't wear sunscreen with tanning beds as sun screen makes it harder to tan.

Tanning beds. Never use 'em. Never use sunscreen if your objective is to get a tan - It's much safer to spend (say) 1 hour in the sun every day without sunscreen than 8 hours with SPF8 even though you get roughly the same amount of tanning in each case. Sunscreen probably causes cancer because it gives people a false sense of security and makes them think they can stay out in the sun far longer than is actually safe. If you read the labelling you will see that no sunscreen ever claims to prevent or even limit skin cancer, because there's no evidence that they do - all they're doing is making people have far more exposure than they otherwise would. I don't think it's a coincidence that we've had a big rise in skin cancer all over the world at the same time as a big rise in the use of sunscreen.

Finally, check yourself occasionally and go to a doctor if anything looks suspicious - Early detection is by *far* the biggest factor in successful treatment of skin cancer.

HTH...

Tanning bed. One goes there to get tanned. You can already cover yourself under the natural sunlight.

they both are horrible for your skin... they both do about the same damage. i would say natural sunlight is better.. but if going out make sure you use a sunblock and not a sunscreen. also make sure that titanium dioxide or zinc oxide is in the ingredients list.. if not.. sunscreen can actually cause cancer... sorry.. and i know for sure because i had to take a certification class on sundamage.

Tanning beds are the worst! You're exposed to much stronger rays and very close to them. I disagree with them completely. And besides it never looks natural, you end up having a very funny colour and wrinkled skin

Tanning bed is worse

The sun is a natural thing...so it should be ok for your skin as long as you wear sunscreen. it doesnt even have to be 45 or 30...just make sure you re-apply often, and sha-BAM! you gotta tan

Natural Sunlight. It's a litle bit less controlled.
