My thinking: you've PHYSICALLY been there...you can make a phone call to a friend while there saying you're in that location...but then again your experience there has been limited to the airport.

Technically, Yes you have been to that city. Colloquially, no , because people would expect that if you have been to a certain city/State you would know a few major landmarks at least or places of interest. You would also be able to participate in the discussion on that city/state if you have had the first hand experience, just being on the airport does not give you that option and you would feel out of place on such forums/discussions.

I guess its the same as driving by a city/state by road and you were the driver (You hardly notice anything, though in some sense its still better than just being on airport).

No it does not. If you were in another country and you were laying over in their airport, would your passport be stamped? No.

Airports are common areas as in the movie "The Terminal" where Tom Hanks is 'stuck' in the airport because his country no longer exists and he doesn't have papers to get into America. (Sad what Zeta-Jones did to him in the movie BTW).

If for bragging rights of how many states you have been in, then by all means say you have been there!

Good question. You are physically there so, yes I would say you have been to that state. :)

The airport is part of the state.. so, you have technically spent some of your trip in that particular state. :D

wrong....an example...Newark Liberty Airport....seems like it would be in Newark, NJ right? Actually, the airport is located in Elizabeth, NJ, just outside of Newark. So while you can say you've been to Jerzee, you won't be able to say you've been to Newark, NJ.....not that you'd want to go there.

it matters on what you think. but i'd say yes. i mean, the floor you're standing on was built by people of that place and the place's ground is actually right beneath your feet.
