IThe best book I ever read is called "The Five People You Meet In Heaven". My son read it when he was 14 and loved it too! It's not a religious story....more like a tale about human nature, life and what one person thinks the afterlife is like. It's a small book so you should be able to knock it off fairly quick. Before you decide to dismiss it just because of the title please check some reviews on line. I guarantee you will not be disappointed! It truly is a timeless story that appeals to all ages. Take care and I hope you have an amazing day!
Also....
"The Lovely Bones" is a pretty good book too. It's about a young girl...about 13....who gets molested and killed by her neighbor. The whole story is written as though she is telling it from the grave.

Im not sure what your reading preference is, but it sounds like you are into problem novels. Books with characters who face real life problems and either triumph or succumb.
Here are a few suggestions:
Crank by Ellen Hopkins:Kristina Georgia Snow is the perfect daughter: gifted high school junior, quiet, never any trouble. But on a trip to visit her absentee father, Kristina disappears and Bree takes her place. Bree is the exact opposite of Kristina — she's fearless. Through a boy, Bree meets the monster: crank. And what begins as a wild, ecstatic ride turns into a struggle through hell for her mind, her soul — her life.
Shattering Glass by Gail Giles:When Rob, the charismatic leader of the senior class, turns the school nerd into Prince Charming, his actions lead to unexpected violence. ( A real thriller!!)
The Beast by Walter Dean Myers:A visit to his Harlem neighborhood and the discovery that the girl he loves is using drugs give sixteen-year-old Anthony Witherspoon a new perspective both on his home and on his life at a Connecticut prep school.
An adult biography with teen appeal, A Piece of Cake by Cupcake Brown: There are shelves of memoirs about overcoming the death of a parent, childhood abuse, rape, drug addiction, miscarriage, alcoholism, hustling, gangbanging, near-death injuries, drug dealing, prostitution, or homelessness.
Cupcake Brown survived all these things before she’d even turned twenty. (This book had me in tears.)
For laugh-out-loud funny, read Be More Chill by Ned Vizzini:
Badly in need of self-confidence and a change of image, high school nerd Jeremy Heere swallows a pill-sized super computer that is supposed to help him get whatever he wants.

Anything by Francesca Lia Block is amazing. Her stories are so..I don't know...you just get lost in them and don't want to put them down. Also, Hard Love by Ellen Wittlinger is my absolute favorite book. StarGirl by Jerry Spinelli is amazing; I just finished it. It made me cry.
Well, hope that helps you out a little bit. :]
