Painted wood and graphite. The eraser is made of rubber. A pencil almost entirely comes from trees.

Wood and Graphite...i think. I know the inside of the pencil (the part that makes the thing write) is graphite. Everybody always thinks it's lead. As for the outside: Wood. What else could it be?

A Standard # 2 Pencil is composed of: The Center is made out of Graphite (it is a form of Carbon). The Outside is made out of wood. The Eraser is made out of rubber. The Metal on it is made out of aluminum. The Paint is just that paint.

Pencils did used to be contain lead, but they stopped making them with lead because kids often suck the end their pencils(I doubt it it resulted in death but im sure it made them ill). Thats why and how they started making them out of graphite, which is harmless.

The "handle" is make out of Wood. The stuff that makes the marks is graphite, as lead is poisonous. The eraser is primarily made out of rubber but more expensive erasers can be fashioned from vinyl, plastic, or gum-like materials.

A lot of people have said "Lead". This is not true. A pencil contains graphite {or "led"}, and not the poisionous metal lead.
It's normaly contained within a piece of wood, and painted.
