As a Southerner, I can say that I don't spend much time talking badly about the North, but there are a few stereotypes that we have that are not very flattering. All drama left over from the Civil War.
On the other side, I've also had to battle many stereotypes held by Northerners about Southerners. For example, the belief that we're all Bible-toting farmers. Someone must be talking up there as well...

I live in Tennessee and people from the South feel the same way. Most people just assume that the North calls us dumb hicks when that's not the case at all. Most people are friendly and the only people that talk behind you backs are the stupid rednecks that give the South a bad reputation. Most people are friendly though. Please don't think we are stupid, ignorant, southern-accented hillbillies because that's not the case at all. The only difference I found in the South from the North is everyone is just a little more laid back in the South. But of course depending on which part of the North your from I understand that your lives can be pretty stressful do to work and deadlines. But back to the topic at hand; personally I do not talk about our Northern neighbors behind their backs. Of course, the case may be different with others. It's the same concept because I know for a fact that a few people in the North talk about how ignorant and obtuse we are. So it's mainly a matter of people and how you react to them. But in the end, the United States is one country. And we all have to live together here, North and South.

Sigh, how bored you must be.
We talk about Yanks no more or less than apparantly they talk about us. When we do, its out of fun not spite (rumor has it we lost the war, we're still not sure since our soldiers haven't made it home yet). This is AMERICA and no one holds blondes in comtempt because their blonde, or the polish because their polish. The same goes for the North or the South. Its just a fun little distinction to "play" with. No disrespect, we are all the same and quite a few, if not most of us southerner's are related closely to Northerner's, Westerner's and Eastener's.
As far as language goes, we're "lazy" and draw out our vowel, Northerner's talk "faster" and Easterners make their "a's" sound like the "A" in Father all the time. Only Westerner's sound kinda Neutral or more phoentically correct.

Okay. I know exactly what your talking about! I used to live in the south and our neighbors we very friendly, but when we heard what they were actually saying about us "yankees" it was so mean. Even what they were saying about me [i was 5 yrs old]. I also think that when they say "bless your heart" it really means something like 'go to hell asshole'. But of corse not everyone who is from the south is like that-- only the small few who stand out so much that it seems like they are the majority.

I am a gossipy Texan. Yes, we talk about everyone regardless of their origin. That means we talk about other Southerners too. But last time I checked, the South did not hold the monopoly on gossip. Would you prefer it if we were just rude to your face like most of the Yankees I know?
hdhswildcatz: "Bless your heart" has a variety of meanings. "Go to Hell" is just one of them. It can also mean "You poor thing" or "You're dumb as dirt" or "Aren't you a sweetie".
Bless your heart.

It does not matter where people are from. People talk about people. I think people would rather talk about other people than talk about themselves and their own flaws. It doesn't matter what region in America you live in. If the people in your world aren't behaving like they want you to be happy healthy and safe then they don't deserve to be in your world. Period.

They talk behind everybody's back. North, south, east, west - they don't care. They're gossiping.

Most southerners are a pretty friendly lot. Well, unless you are a homosexual, minority, or damned liberal atheist....
Yankees are okay, though, they just talk funny.
