guage refers to the thickness in the string, most strings are 16. The higher the number the thinner the string and the more spin you can generate. You obviously lose durability though.

The only thing I've known guage to refer to in tennis is the thickness of the strings on a racket. Different gauges will give different effects as far as power & ball control go.

as you can tell by the other answers, it relates to thickness of the string...16 is normal, 17 is thinner but gives you more spin but breaks more often. the higher the number, the thinner the string
