I'm a senior this year, and right now I'm experiencing a slump, an all-time low, about going to college. I want I've failed some classes, and now I'm faced with having to make them up. I can't decide what school to go to, or what to do with my life!!! I feel like I have a good mind, should I use it, which takes hard work, or should I let it slip? HELP!

You should try going to college. Whatever's got you down may change once you start college, because it will be a whole new experience and it may be exactly what you need right now. And a college degree is something no one will ever be able to take away from you. It can be a very important investment in your future.

Assuming that you don't end up marrying some one rich, it has become next to impossible to be even considered for a good job without a degree. You will hear that 6 of the top 10 wealthiest people are college drop outs. They also were very smart, in the right place at the right time, and got really lucky. Do not think that this will happen to you. In the near future, you may not be able to get a loan without a degree. If you do not go to college, you will be facing a tough life. Get a degree, any kind, business, psychology, biology, marketing, economics, athletics, anything.

Make up the classes you need to be accepted at a college. The average college student will change their major 6 or 7 times during their college career so don't worry about not knowing what direction you should go in. Any of your peers that say they know what Major they will get their degree in doesn't know what they are talking about.

You may want to consider going to a community college to pick up the basic courses everybody takes the first year or two. These credits can then be transferred to a 4 year university after you have a better idea of what you may be interested in.

My advice is to start out at a community college and just take core classes (stuff you KNOW you'll have to take regardless of the major you pick...) math, science, english...while you're taking those classes you will start to see things that interest you. You might even find a class interesting that you never thought you would, before. Or, during that time, you may decide college just isn't for you right now. There is nothing wrong with taking a year off to figure things out. I waited to go to College 2 years after graduating, and I think I did better than if I had forced myself to go immediately after HS. Everyone is different and it doesn't make you a failure if you take some time to figure out your life! Good luck!

College has helped me to attain what I wanted in life. I say go for it, don't give up. Do whatever you can to get higher than a High School diploma.

Consider this:
All of my friends and associates who didn't go to college tell me that they wish they could turn back time and go to College or even University. They feel that they "Gave up" and are too old now to go back to school.
They are never too old, but despite this, they feel they lost their chance.

If you are having trouble keeping your marks up in school, ask for help, spend more time on homework and studying, spend more time on assignments. Generally "Kick it up a notch"
Going to college was one of the best things I ever did. Don't pass up the opportunity. And if you ever fall into a slump, pick yourself up and keep going after what's necessary.
If you are faced with a barrier... go around it, over it, under it, or even through it. Don't let anything get in your way.
If you are having difficulty choosing what you want to do with your life, try some volunteer work, research the occupations which perks your skills. For instance, if you have really good people skills, consider being a counselor, judge, police officer, etc.
But don't let it worry you too much, it will come in time.
Worry about what is more important, getting your marks up. Because your high school marks will determine whether or not you will be able to get into college.

A famous quote:
--- Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars!

Good Luck!

There is a way to buy yourself more time, if you can't decide right now. Go to a community college and start an AA degree.

AA degree is pretty much the first two years of any 4 year college, and the AA degree will transfer to most 4 year college as a substitute for the first two years of that college.

If you go to a community college and decide you don't want to go to 4 year college, you can change your major to an AS degree of your choice. AS degree is the last 2 years of 4 year college but is a "lite" version. If you start by taking such classes as College Math or English 1101, most of it will transfer to AS degree.

Let me tell you this much.... Later on in your life, you can get as far ahead as you want with or without a degree. BUT, more degree you have, you get there faster and easier. (or before you die...)

Time and energy you'd invest at this moment of your life won't get wasted. That is, if you take it seriously and finish your degree.

Good luck.

I skipped college and started working in a mortgage office organizing and filing papers. I then was prompted twice and was very very happy with my life. ( making lots of money) One day the company decided to lay off 30% of employees. I was one. i then realized that getting another job was harder than ever without a degree unless I wanted to start at the bottom again. If I had gone to college right out of high school I'd be done by now. (now 23yrs old)So I moved in with my mom and started college and am now halfway done.

I advise you to take the college route because you will be struggling a lot less in the work force. It will for sure make your life less stressful when your done.

Nowadays, you almost HAVE to go to college! It seems like any job requires it!! However, I know what it feels like to not be decided on what you want to do...I was in the same position. And during the times when I wasn't sure, I went to a technical college part time taking general education courses...then, when I decided what I wanted to do, I didn't have to start from scratch. Plus, by going to school part time, it allowed me to keep my full time job. Employers will be pretty understanding when it comes to schooling, and if it could benefit them, some will even pay for it!! Hang in there!! Don't give up!! Just keep your eye on the prize!!

YES. you should do whatever you can to get into college because it will really help you in life. if you ever want to make over 50,000 a year then you pretty much have to have a degree. not having an education is the one thing in life that is most likely to hold you back from your potential. I know school isn't fun, but it will be well worth the investment later. so just hang in there!

Well, knowledge IS power. If you don't go to college, make sure to keep up the self education. Although, i must warn you, you're salary and career potential will be very limited. I have a bachelor's and I still have a hard time finding a decent job. I realize it's because a master's is more in demand.
