Chess isn't only for nerds, but the game has been analyzed to a point that one could spend many hundreds of hours studying and memorizing chess strategy to improve game performance over a casual player. Though the game is not "solved" (e.g. absolutely ideal play has been determined to a point that A can always triumph over B from the starting positions) the "scholarly" analyses of the game has brought it to a point where a sufficiently-studied player can know the positions well enough to triumph over a player who is a better tactician.

No. My son, who's 8, got into chess at school. Since he started playing he's been doing much better in school than ever before. Chess has made him use critical thinking skills that he had not been using before. It gets him to think things through and realize there are consequences for every move he makes--much like in real life. Just for the record, he also likes baseball, hockey, basketball, riding bikes and everything else kids like to do.

Chess isn't for nerds just many of them play it because it's a game that tests your brain. Nerds are usually smart so they play that game. you don't have to be consiceded a nerd if you play chess.

Chess is for people who like chess. If you miss out because you're afraid of what people think, that's sad.
