Sometimes if you call them to "cancel your line", as they have to do the best to keep you as a customer may bring you a free phone or a reduced price on a good one... try that, but if you see that they dont react that way thank them, hang up and try again ;)

Insurance is a waste. Having worked closely with Cingular customer care, I can assure you that they will not replace your phone for anything less than $50. Your only option to get a cheaper phone is to buy a refurbished phone from a fly-by-night "everything" cell phone store.
I suggest switching to a new company. Cingular will charge you a cancellation fee (usually $150 depending on where you live), but they will usually give you up to 6 months to pay it. I can get you the Samsung Blade (A900) on Sprint for $24.99 after rebates/credits. It's basically the RAZR on steroids. (mp3, video, TV, broadband phone-as-modem internet for your computer, High-Def screen, On-Demand info, etc.) I can also guarantee you a lower monthly rate than the Cingular plan for a larger coverage area and more minutes. After a few months on Sprint, you'll have come out ahead and have had a much better phone in the meantime.

If your contract has expired, you could call Cingular and tell them to close your account. Naturally, they'll make you all kinds of offers including a better plan at a lower cost, free phone, etc. That's what Sprint offered me. If you have time remaining on your contract, I think you're stuck. Btw, those free phones everyone offers are nowhere near as good as the ones you pay $50-$100 for. My daughter and her husband have Cingular and each has a phone. They can be sitting next to each other and the signal strength meter on the free phone shows 1 or 2 fewer bars then the $70 phone. Ditto with her friends phones.

I would buy a brand new phone that I liked. Refurbished just means used, it's no better than the phone that's broken.I'd rather spend the money and get a phone I like than to take whatever model they feel like giving me.

I have had to replace two phones that were damaged and they always sent me a new phone for free ( just paid shipping and tax). Call again and ask them if you can replace your phone with a new one for free.
