Epic: Very imposing or impressive; surpassing the ordinary.

Epic – applied to a work that meets at least one of the following criteria: it is a long narrative poem on a great and serious subject, told in an elevated style, and centered on a heroic or quasi-divine figure on whose actions depends the fate of a tribe, a nation, or the human race.

The epic typically emphasizes the struggle between the hero’s ethos (the disposition, character, or attitude peculiar to a specific people, culture, or group that distinguishes it from other people of groups; fundamental values or spirit; mores) and his human failings or mortality.

An epic contains the following elements:

catalogs digressions
long speeches
journeys or quests
various trials or tests of the hero
similes and metaphors
divine intervention

Love Story - Brokeback Mountain is considered an epic story of enduring love

Length. 3 or more hours.

And then it has to have dramatic impact and usually will have a great hero. Epics were originally extended poems about heroes.

If you say something has "epic proportions" then it is large and grand.

An epic is big and flashy and dramatic and heroic and long.

A wonderful drama or adventure with all the same qualities as an epic but that was only 90 minutes long, wouldn't be considered an epic at all.

Oh, and Pirates of the Caribbean is not an epic. It's an action-adventure.

Epics need to be at least 2.5 hours in length (or longer) and have a wide scope in both how the story is told and what is covered.

"Lord of the Rings"
"Troy"
"Napoleon"
"Intolerance"
"Lawrence of Arabia"
"Cleopatra"
"The Ten Commandments"

There's a start.
