We recently replaced all the old paned windows (around 80 years old) in our home and I want to turn some of them into mirrors. What would be my first step in doing this? Who do I take them to? Do I special order the mirror and do it myself? What is a round about cost in doing it? As you can see, I want something done that I have no clue about and any lead in any direction would help. :o)

Well, first, don't use a razor blade to cut glass. Use a proper glass cutter instead--the dinky ones are just a few bucks and you won't slash your fingers with the little wheel when they slip.

Find a glass shop for the mirrors--it doesn't have to be a stained-glass shop but if that's your only choice, it shouldn't be all that expensive. Or maybe they can just coat the glass to make it into mirrors, which wouldn't require taking the glass out at all. If you are OK at woodworking, you can take the mullions apart (the wood pieces around the panes) and put the mirrors in, then put in little glazier's nails to hold the mirrors in place. Reassemble the frame around the outside of the mirror, caulk it up, and make sure you have a way to hang it (like put two little eye-screws in the sides and put a wire through them to hang the mirror from a nail.)

Mirrors aren't hard to cut if you know how to cut glass--just be sure to cut on the glass side, not the coated side. Check out the This Old House website (I saw them glazing windows with lots of little panes on one show) or DIY.com to see if they have step-by-step instructions. I'd do the work myself, but then, I know how to do stained glass and my dad knows how to do woodwork, so I'm all set for a project like this. It doesn't sound all that hard if you're ambitious, so maybe you could do it yourself with a little guidance. Good luck! Glass is fun and a beautiful medium.

I would say check with glass companies and see if they have mirrors that could be custom cut. If not, then find a mirror that can fit into the window. You can take a razor blade and score a mirror so it breaks in an even line. Do this and treat the mirror like the window- you just place the mirror in the pane and caulk it into place for a firm hold.

Just buy the appropriate size mirrored 1/8inch glass pane and either replace the glass or install it with the glass. A lot of work but probably the best way. You could stop at a place that tints car windows and see if they have an easier method.

LOL.

Any glass shop in your neighborhood can do this for you as long as the sash is in sound condition. They simply replace the glass with a mirror of the same size and thickness. Real simple and fairly inexpensive.
