I've found poor sizing can do that, but also poor installation and use. Is he holding it in place? That's important.

An estimated 2 to 5 percent of condoms break or tear during use. Most often, this is caused by misuse; not using enough water-based lubrication can cause condom damage, as can creating tiny tears with jewelry, fingernails, among other objects. Condoms that are past the expiration date; that have been stored improperly; damaged during or after manufacture; or that are improperly used are other possible causes of condom failure. Vaginal spermicides should always be used with condoms to help decrease the possibility of pregnancy should condom failure occur.

Is this a field study? My guess is your boyfriend secretly wants to get you pregnant, and is snagging them with his fingernail before commencing.

A condom can be blown up to the size of a basketball before breaking, so a lack of lube, careless handling, or 12-year old condoms from his wallet are about the only legitimate reasons they will break.

don't use any lube that is oil based-- oil will eat through a condom quick-- try this at home. take a condom and blow it up and tie like a balloon. rub baby oil or another product that contains oil-- and pow it pops. WATER based lubes such as ky at the best. in a pinch saliva works good too.

another reason they break could be you are not leaving enough room at the end for the semen. i've found that that little tip thing doesn't cut it. i need at least a 1/4 inch.

watch for expiration dates, keep them cool--don't keep them in the car,and watch fingernails when opening packages.

Your category is trying to conceive so why are you asking about what makes condoms break? Are you trying to trap a man by having a child by him? If I'm right please give me best answer for my deductive skills. If not and you're pissed at me, report me, you won't hurt my feelings. Good luck tho, with whatever you are doing. Just be sure to consider all angles before you proceed.

Most of the time they break due to the lack of lubrication. Try some KY Lube or protellum Jelly!

Lack of lube. Use a lubed one, and they tear less.
Reservoir tip helps too.
If the guy is huge, use the right size, of course! not those peewees made for the high school boys!

they break because of petroleum jelly.

Oil based compounds WILL dissolve latex. The idiot above who said petroleum jelly is a FRICKIN MORON.

Read the labels. It says NEVER to use Petroleum Jelly or oils.

KY is water based...okay for use.

Misuse. Use of petroleum products, putting it on wrong, too much friction from bad positions, use past expiration date, improper storage.
