should i leave it running for 24 hours?

yes, I leave mine on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

You must always have it on. Otherwise they will eventually get sick and die. Depending on the size of your tank you may need a larger filter or even more than one. Or you may need an under filter as well. You must also clean the filters on a regular basis. All these things ( and more...thermometer, & the proper medications) are needed to keep your tank clean and keep your fish healthy. The healthier they are, the more you can enjoy them.
Visit an aquarium (live fish store) and ask someone to give you pointers and suggestions that will help you maintain your fish. They will be glad to help.

A filter is never supposed to be shut off. The filter media are a good source of nitrifying bacteria, these bacteria are essential to convert all wastes secreated by fishes into harmless material.
However these bacteria like well oxygenated surfaces to live.
If a filter will shut down, these bacteria will die and might create problems in the tank
