If you're running XP go to Start->Run and type msconfig! You'll find a startup section there! From there just deselect the programs you don't want the OS to run at startup!

You should be able to stop most of them in MSCONFIG/STARTUP, but note that the names of the programs may or may not be obvious. Some like Microsoft Messenger have boxes you can check or uncheck in the programs themselves to determine if they will load at startup. Others like QuickTime can load from the registry and become a real nuisance to get rid of. Sometimes if a program is running as a service you can disable it, but since I'm not familiar with your level of skill you might ask someone you trust to help with that. Best option is if you do not use the program, uninstall it.

there are alot of good answers on here but if you make a misstake you can stop your computer from working or doing what it needs to do for the system to open properly...if you just run a utility program it will help out and is safer for someone that is not into p.c. repair ....you can download free ones at www.tucows.com and look around and find what you are looking for and if this start-up program does not hurt your p.c. you should try not to get up.set and just fix it your self with the answers peps gave you...good luck...

After unchecking the programs in the startup, click apply>Close and then restart. Then check the small box and click ok.

You do NOT need to buy/download any software. What you need is already installed on every version of Windows since Windows 95. Just do what Doggzilla said, click apply, then restart. That's all there is to it. Good luck.
