I have two fairly old tshirts with this problem and have tried doing the whole leaving it them a mixture of vinegar and water overnight and that hasn't worked. What are these marks under the armpits and how can I get rid of them?

Soak it in red dye rinse.

It doesn't sound like a deodorant stain to me. Could it possibly be that the underarms remained damp too long and mildewed? Regardless, if it isn't a grease-based stain I'm not sure how you would get it out of a red shirt without bleach. Sorry.

Aluminum is used in deodorants and can turn gray. Try hydrogen peroxide - it might help or it might make it worse. (Try it in a small area first.)
