Someone along the line, I decided to drop all the untruths from my life - including the little white lies that are supposed to be told out of concern for others. This has overhauled my life in ways you cannot imagine, and I encourage it for everyone. I have been free and happy ever since.
First, if you tell the truth, you quickly sort your friends out. People you don't like you stop catering to, and they will leave you. It turns out there are other people out there, and because they are attracted to what they see, and they see the real you, you are much happier with them than the people who liked the fake you.
Second, if you know in advance that you are going to tell the truth, you are more likely to make the truth something you want it to be. If you do fall short of your goals, at least the situation is dealt with quickly, because you cut through the nonsense and hedging and just get it out of the way.
Third, you have an incredible amount of credibility with those you are close to. Communications can be efficient, because they know you are not prone to exaggeration, overstatement, or white lies. If I tell you I'm not mad at you, I'm not mad at you and it's over. If I am, I can tell you "I'm upset with you because of X, but I know that I'll get over it so give me a day." All that BS is gone from my life.
Fourth and finally, I often keep my mouth shut now when I would have said something before. That has freed my life up from a lot of garbage, when I'm glad later that I just didn't say anything.
Now I don't know about all of that morals stuff. I mean, I'm a moral person I guess, but if you don't share my moral view, then my morals won't be persuasive to you.
If you want a life that is free, happy, and devoid of BS, then start being truthful all the time right now, and you will be there in a few short months.

You tell the truth because it's what a morally responsible person does, no matter what the truth may be or what might come of it.
How's this for a thought: Stop doing things that will get you in trouble, and you won't have to either tell the truth about it or lie to cover up what you've done!

I agree, it always gets you into trouble, I will tell the truth when it is very important (like if you are under oath or make a promise) but most of the time it is optional because nice girls finish last!!! And most people do not tell the truth, so I relate to them in the same way.

Hold on a minute !!!
It's not the telling of the story that gets you into trouble, my friend.
It is the action done, that made the story, that got you into trouble.
TRUTH in itself is a good thing, and keeps you from digging a hole bigger that the one you're already in, because of your first bad judgement in the action in the story. It is telling a LIE that would get you into even deeper trouble.
There are VERY FEW lies that don't eventually OUT themselves. I don't know why that is, but most people decide to either tell the truth, or keep their mouth shut, so as to not to have to lie,
because they know what I've just said is correct.
It is my observation that a LIE usually is found out, because TRUTH is weirdly spiritual, and will triumph over a lie no matter how long it takes.
A really great example is most young adults, after being accepted and having earned the respect of their parents as young adults...
after they "befriend" the parent,
they always want to "confess" all the lies they told as TEENS...ha ha ha ha, especially the biggest ones!
Go figure! but it is hilarious.

Why do you think telling the truth will always get a person in trouble?
The truth will set you free.

One lie takes you to say anoter lie, and another, another. Some ppl have a guilty concious and that's not health and sooner or later they will spill the truth out. Another thing, truth not always gets you into trouble, sometimes it's the best excuse. If you don't say the truth and ppl find out you've been lying, that's a ig trouble. Once I broke a jar and didn't tell my mom. She found out and she punished me because I lied to her not because I broke the jar. Also it's karma, you do something wrong, and you'll have payback, something bad is going to happen to you.

It's not telling the truth that gets you in trouble... it's the things that you did.

When you always tell the truth you tend not to do things that would get you in trouble.

It's not the truth that gets you in trouble, it's the other stuff you did. Stop doing things you don't want to tell people about and life gets a lot simpler.

It does seem to work that way, most of the time. But, you know, if I do tell a lie, I feel awful and end up telling the truth anyway, and that can be more embarrassing than just telling the truth to begin with... :)
