I like the answer, "true strife," and even before I saw that answer, I was going to put something like it.
Here's why:
Happiness is fleeting. It must be, because we are a fickle species with various and conflicting natures and sensations. They say you cannot truly know something without knowing first its opposite. For instance, try explaining to a man who's been blind his entire life what the color blue is. The point is that you can't without explaining how it compares to other colors. If the blind man has never seen color, then he cannot fathom the concept of blue.
Similarly, a person can't truly appreciate his or her feeling of "happiness" without having experienced "unhappiness." In this way, happiness is fleeting and is only truly experienced and comprehended through strife. For without strife, there would be no conflicting feelings and emotions.

The answer to this question all depends on the individual. Each and every person is different so what makes one person happy my make another sad. The only true happiness is what every person wants for their life. So it all depends on what you call true happiness.
Hope it helps.

Happiness is a reflection. You may not see it at the time, because happiness is what's left after a life of service, love of others, and devotion to something outside yourself.
It might look like aggravation, disappointment, tenderness, sweat, patience, soccer games, but it is probably happiness.

That is the question I was ever making myself. I would like to know. But it seems you never reach true happiness. There´s always something missing.

Ecclesiastes 3: 12-14
I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. 13) That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil---this is the gift of God. 14) I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that men will revere him. (for me, God is true happiness)
