This was my first strumming exercise:

Strum up and down with a consistent motion, but don't hit all of the strings everytime you pass. Mix it up a little bit, go down, hit strings, come up, don't hit strings, go down, don't hit strings, whatever. And if you know your chords, this will sound even better: don't hit all six strings every time. Hit the high strings sometimes, hit the low strings some times. It'll give it flavor, which is how guitar playing south of the border (south america) adapted it. If you play all strings included in the chord everytime then you'll start playing more country-style stuff. Do what you like but be relaxed.

Hal Leonard makes some wonderful teach yourself books for the guitar. They usually include a cd too, so you can compare what you're playing to what it's supposed to sound like. These books work. There are also dvd's and computer programs, but I don't like them as much. Good luck. Oh and if you want my advice- start out on an acoustic guitar, it will make you a better player.
