People just tend not to like anybody outside of their own "circle".Most of the time I can't understand it,but then I read something rude on here, and I get it,for a while. Then, thankfully,I forget how cruel a lot of people can be,for a while.

no the slavery thing has nothing to do with it.
Back in the 80's The Northern Cities were emptying out due to huge Layoffs in the Manufacturing and steel industries. The only place that there were Jobs was in the South where the climate was better during the winter and land was plentiful and cheap so we had a mass exdous of people from the north to the south and along with this exdous northerners brought their rude and obnoxius mannerrs that clashed with the Southern way of life.
To the point that we southerners would rather not have to deal them . Over the years most "transplanted "yankees have adjusted and have embraced the Southern Ways or help to blend in some of their better ways into our style of living.Unfortuantly there are those who can't or won't budge on both sides and you get the apperance of Southerners disliking People from the North When in Reality most true "Southern Born and Southern Bred " colud care less as to where a person is from, we base our opinions on the behaviour we see.

There's a lot to this question. I think a college student could easily write a thesis about this.
Of course the North and the South have a long history of animosity, and it seems like the southerners still have quite a bit of that towards the northerners. There's the general feeling that southerners distrust folks from the north, and consider them "city slickers", "tax collectors", "revenuers", "suits", etc. who are there to take their money and make life harder for them.
That whole civil war thing could probably be traced back to slavery in some ways, but at the time it was more of an economical battle than anything else. The south had an economic advantage over the north, free labor. The north took "the high road", and fought to free the slaves and equal the playing field.
But now, it's hard to believe folks who never owned slaves still resent northerners over issues like slavery. Why should they? It's pretty bigoted to assume that they are in favor of it or would defend the right our their ancestors to enslave folks. More likely there are other general socio / economic reasons for the clash between south and north.
There are many specific differences in cultures that make southerners dislike folks from the north. As a person from the North (well, northern CA) who moved to the south (well, Dallas Texas, which actually considers itself another country, not part of the southern US), I have met many southerners who took an immediate dislike to me. Even more so than normal.
I noticed a couple of things about that.
1. Southerners talk slow. They take their time, tend not to come directly to a point, and consider that type of stuff to be rude. Northerners are faster talkers, and get right to the point. They show less patience, they want to finish the sentences for the slow speaking southerners, and the quintessential northerner (the New Yorker) is pretty proud of their ability to be obnoxious.
Now to Southerners, this appears to be rude and uncivilized. Northerners are not "tactful nor gentile" like they are. So in their minds they are better than northerners.
To Northerners, slow equals not so smart. So generally speaking, they feel like they are intellectually superior to the southerners, and that is generally something the southerner can pick up on.
Now you have a clash of cultures caused by some very subtle differences in the way we speak and think. I actually had a good friend who lived in Tennessee but spent a lot of time in California tell me that when he stays in the northern part of the US for long enough, he starts talking faster and thinking faster. He likes it in some respects, but dislikes the stress it causes and the fact that he is not as social.
I find when I spend a lot of time in the south, my speech slows down, along with about everything else. I feel more relaxed. Truly, we are all different in some ways, especially when you get to talk in generalities, but in the end, people are people and a product of their environment and socialization.

Not all southerners hate northerners, but many of the southerners I know that don't like the north complain about how rude northerners are. I have dealt with northerners before. I felt more rudeness coming from southerners than northerners. Some people still hold grudges dating back to the Civil War. Others have an eliltist attitude towards northerners.

If there is still anger between the north and south, it has got to be because of the slang we use in the south. The people from the north really like to make fun of way we speak. I think that offends some southerns. If that's not the reason, then heck if I know. I don't have a problem with anyone, know matter where they are from....:) As Forest Gump would say, Happy is as Happy does. :)

I am from Texas, and I don't dislike people from the North,
unless they lack good manners, and have the attitude that because I have a certain accent I may not be as intelligent as they are. I don't dislike them unless they show no respect by littering when they visit our parks and lakes. Or buying up rolling meadows to create a never ending sea of hideous concrete shopping centers. Oh wait, that's a greed issue that doesn't stop at the Mason-Dixon line....
As far as the slavery thing, I fully understand why Scarlett shot that Yankee who was looting her house, after all, he was just up to no good-not to mention totally lacking in manners.

I'm 32 years old, born and raised in Texas. I have nothing against anyone, doesn't matter if they are from the west coast, east coast, north, south, midwest, etc. Boston is my favorite city in the world, I go there every chance I get.
This is a pretty ignorant question, why do you stereo type all southerners as being the same?

I hate to brake it to you. It had nothing to do with slavery and everything to do with Northerners moving down and running the new government during reconstruction. The term for them was "carpetbaggers". That was then, now Southerners just think Northerners are rude and obnoxious. Not my opinion of them just the general feeling here in Dixie.

Are you asking "Why don't Southerners like Northerners?" (Your phrasing is a bit murky.) Although there must certainly be exceptions, I recently returned from a tour of the southeastern US and was treated quite well for a "Yankee"; in fact, the issue of North vs. South was never raised.

No, it's more like southerners would rather be left alone, but the northerners keep looking down their nose at us and keep telling us how to live our lives.
Ever wonder why you never hear someone described as an 'elitist redneck'? Because there aren't any. The elitists are all them Harvard snooty types.
The red-state red-necks would like for the blue-state blue-bloods to mind their own business.
