I am going to be a full time student and the only job I can think of is waitressing. The problem is, I haven't wait table before in my life, I don't know what should be done or how to do it. I am afraid to spill the food all over the place or just forget what somebody ordered? Please help I get nervous just thinking about it.

It's hard work, but gets easier once you get used to it. Just try not to be nervous and it shouldn't take you long to get the hang of it. Good luck:)

Do you already have the waitressing job? If not, I don't advise it. Being this nervous just thinking about it, you'll be too stressed out when you actually do it. Plus, most places want people with prior experience.

Go to the college career center, and look for some type of internship or office type of work. Even a bank teller job would work. There are other things besides waitressing. Have the career center help you. That's why they're there.

If you are thick skin, and decide to try waitressing anyway, practice clearning and carrying heavy things at home. And, always have sense of humor with you. Even big screw ups can be covered up or alleviated with good sense of humor with customers. Be honest about your inexperience and genuinly do the best you can for the customers, and soon, they'll help you out wherever they can.

Good luck, and have the attitude that you can do anything. You'll make it!

A lot of the good waitresses use a mini notebook to take orders down if the restaurant does not have it's own order req form. You will be trained to do things, so you should not be so worried. Don't stress out about it, 'cause that will make you more nervous.

By the way, a lot of schools offer student work programs, or hire students on campus. You should ask around, they usually post jobs on their bullen boards around a certain place or by each department.

Can you think of 1 job you've never done that you wouldn't be nervous about doing?

Everyone is nervous about a job they know little about. That's why employers train. Its not hard, but it's also not rewarding you make a fraction of minimum wages and don't get tipped to compensate.

A lot of diners and restaurants abuse their employees. Changing their hours all the time and that sucks for you when you have class. I suggest you try and find something else if possible. Use this job as a last resort.

Why are you only thinking about being a waitress. Think in a better job, one that you can feel comfortable. Like for i.e. receptionist, caashier or etc and If you are receiving Financial Aid for your Studies you may have the option of working in the same College or University as a Work Study.

You really should think twice before being a waitress it probably would be better if you get like a clothing store job that way you could be a cashier or pt the clothes up. It`s way better than spilling food o the floor.

People are weird about food. If you have to do it then just grit your teeth and try it. Remember that the worst thing that can happen is that you get fired. I like the other person's suggestion about working at the school doing something, library, sports desk, whatever. Also, maybe its best to concentrate on the classes, live cheaply, get grants. You can pay with loans if you need to. Study something that will lead to a reasonable job and it won't be too bad paying back the loans.

You may personally believe whatever you're asking them is a serious issue, but if you ask a group of people who are highly cynical about it then you don't deserve and most certainly will not get a serious answer. its like if I asked you, "which socks should I wear today? the green ones with the blue stripes or the pink ones with the gray stripes?". You don't care about my socks, and you really couldn't care less if I wore socks at all and even less whether or not they had stripes. To me, my sock choice is a crucial and highly important part of my day. But would you give me a well thought out, serious answer? I highly doubt it.

Waiting tables is like anything else, practice makes perfect. The life of a student waiter is very stressful, but the money is good and if you are good with details and are personable it should be a pretty smooth transition. Again, it should not be that hard as long as you focus and treat it like something that has to be done with your complete attention.

I am sure there are lots of other people there to help you for your first time. You catch on after a while, and you can practice at home and carry food on plates to familey members, and you can do it for your roomates too. It won't be hard, they have organized planners so you don't forget there order. You wont spill food everywhere, the usually have push around carts for beginners.

How do you know you will be bad at it unless you try? Of course, if you are really nervous, I am sure you could find a job on campus, assuming you are applying to university or college, you could probably get a job working in the library or bookstore. If you really want to work in a restaraunt, get your smart serve and work behind a bar.

I am sure you will get the hang of it as time progresses, just take your time and move carefully. Make sure to write down who ordered what, and take it one step at a time.
