The instructions are included with each tampon box that describe the specifics on that.

Try using the applicator type tampon, it's much easier, and you know straight away how far to put it in. You just hold the applicator between your thumb and third finger and push the tip into the opening of your vagina until your fingers are touching the outside. Then with your index finger push the cardboard tube gently into yourself until the cardboard tubes are totally inside each other. Aim towards the small of your back, and not straight up, because your cervix tends to curve that way. Don't forget to take the cardboard tubes out!
If it's in properly, you shouldn't be able to feel it, but always change your tampon every 4-6 hours and use the lowest absorbency designed for your flow. If you need to change your tampon more frequently than four hours, use the next absorbency up. If there's still some clean cotton still showing when you take it out after six hours, change to a lower absorbency, or use a pad if you've been using 'Mini' or 'Lite' absorbencies. This should prevent you from getting Toxic Shock Syndrome, which is rare, but associated with leaving tampons in for too long.
Thought I might as well go the whole hog! :)

There is a ring of muscle at the opening of your vagina. Push the tampon totally past that and don't worry it can't get lost. If it's uncomfortable or you want to make sure it's in there well, give the string a very gentle tug until you feel the resistance of that ring of muscle. There should be enough string outside of your body to easily remove the tampon. Once the tampon is where it should be, you shouldn't feel it. That's one way to know it's in place.
If you still have doubts, tampons come with an instruction book.

put it in untill it feels comfortable which for me and most of my friends is pretty far so we don't feel it. just push it in aways then stand up if it doesn't feel comfortable adjust it just make sure some string is always showing so you can get it out. but anyways you put it in as far as you need to to be comfortable.

Until you're comfortable. Until you can gently tug on the string and get some resistance.

It should be far enough in that you cannot feel it. You should have enough string out that you can pull on to take it out.
Take care.
