Both.

But, balance them both out.

Both have their benefits.

If you are new at your job, show everyone that you are serious in becoming part of the team.

When you have shown yourself to be serious, focused, and capable, then start casually chatting and joking with people.

Find out who the office chatters are and make brief, but friendly, conversation.

Do the same with your direct co-workers and your direct supervisor. It is a great way to be outgoing, to make people feel comfortable and safe with you, and it really helps in negotiating and raise or promotion.

Alright, at my job we have a blast, we play practical jokes, we kid around, we throw food (alright, not all the time), but we are always having a good time together. However, we still get our job done. Our boss likes the lack of tension around the work place that are fun-loving attitudes bring and respects our fun as long as the work gets done and people are taken care of respectfully and professionally. Overall, I think that I love this job the most because we have so much fun working together.

There is a time and place for everything. It is okay to have fun at work, as long as you know when it is time to get serious and do your work. If everyone was serious all the time, then people would get bored with their jobs, and when you get bored, you get unhappy with the place. I say, have fun, laugh it up, joke around, but know when to get your work done.

A little bit of both are good but the best thing to do is remain mostly serious. You are there to work not socialize.

There's a time for this and a time for that. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

a sense of humor is invaluable, but never ever let it
interfere with your or anyone else's doing their jobs.
also keep your boss in mind. if you work for someone
who is all business and no nonsense, then reign yourself
in if you want to prosper there.
