"Classic" novels are classic because they deal with the great human themes like life, death, betrayal, love, and loss. Humans are still preoccupied with these themes; they are what distinguish us from our animal brethren. I suspect that these topics will always be of great interest, regardless of medium.

Most of the classics are boring and depressing. But some are real gems.I believe classics are relevant today.People are pretty much the same even after a 100 years. You can always learn a lot from a well written book no matter the time period or the geography.

Sometimes they are read for exactly the reason they DON'T have something to do with today's t.v., computer game, media conscious times. A good book is a good way to get away and classic novels tend to be great books with great stories for great getaways.

As if T.V., computer games, media are relevant to anything of true importance and meaning??
It's the fact that people don't read anymore that has allowed the country to treat it's people like idiotic sheep who'll hand over their freedoms in favor of superficial patriotism, and treat the office of President as if it were the throne of a King who must be supported lest ye be a traitor.
I'll tell you the difference between the blue states as compared to the red states. The red states curse the blue states as being 'elitist', but truthfully, the blue states are just more literate and well-read. Pick up a book, you southerners! And I'm not talking about the BIBLE!

Classic stories are called so because they endure time. They are stories that are human and entertaining and deal with themes that are always relevant such as love, loss, struggle and life. Also period pieces are able to give a reader insight to another time on a more personal level then media and quick blogs. I hope people never lose the love of reading and the respect for books.

Absolutely. Times might have changed, but people haven't. We've been the same since the dawn of time. Books written long ago have more passion, and more to say about injustice and social economic structure than today's newspapers. Have you read a classic novel? There's a reason why these books have endured 100+ years.

You can read by fun, learn history, learn new views different from your or even improve your soul/rational mind.
Why read Plato, Aristoteles or Victor Hugo or Dumas?
Because they did great work. Its like go to museum and appreciate ancient roman sculpture or impressionist paint. It's related to mind development. Example: Dostoievski had influence over Freud and Sartre.
Time is chained there within these works. It represents ideas, fears, costume from specif age. sometimes, they are deeper than anything new written until now.
I read near to 800-1200 pages each month and I naver saw something new like Dostoievski or Gogol or Maupassant. Our recent period are made by fashion writers, flat and simple. Deeper like 100 years .... are not deep but boring.
Another thing is: people need learn since they are kids. Reading you are building your mind freely and not based on standard patterns from our actual society. Each step is another level into your capability to learn and more - understand.
Yes, they have a lot to say as our mind have a lot of space to be filled with those fullish worlds.

Absolutely they are still relevant! The same basic themes run through all books, be they a couple of hundred years old or a couple of days. Love, betrayal, revenge and so on are all there, just in a different setting to that which you are used to. Broaden your mind and try one!
After all, it isn't the format that is important, it is the story and whether it speaks to you on a basic level.

Even classic novels deal with themes that are still relevant today. Jane Austen, Chaucer, Mark Twain, Emily Bronte--classic novels still explore different human emotions, social issues, and the basic needs of us all.
One thing that I love about classic works is that even a hundred years ago, people were still writing about love, money problems, and societal problems. It makes me realize that we're not alone.

Because they either haven't read them yet or they're just really, really good. A classic novel is classic because you'd still read it years later... like a classic movie... you'd watch it again, it's timeless.
Sure, people eventually need a break from the video games, tv and other media.

Of course they are relevent. How do you think the tv shows and computer games etc. come up with ideas. Alot of the ideas come from classic novels. Why don't you sit down and read one or two.. Like Dracula, or Lolita. or the Old Man and the Sea for examples. They are great reads.
