Last Thursday, I first saw the job listing on the staffing agency's website - I applied for the job the same day. On Saturday, I saw a similar job on Company X's website, so I also applied. In a follow-up call to the staffing agency today, the recruiter informed me that the job was actually at Company X and that I should NOT apply directly to them! At this point, I wasn't sure what to say so I said nothing. What should I do? Will it look bad that I applied to the same job twice using two different methods?

My suggestion, do nothing. There was no way for you to know in advance that the job was really with the same company that the agency works with. And agencies know that you're most likely not limiting your job search to them.

The only reason why the agency is trying to talk you out of it is because if you get it directly, then they miss out on the commission.

The company knows which people the agency is throwing their way, so whomever you hear back from first, that's who you go by. If the company decides to hire you directly, they avoid paying the agency commission. If you get it through the agency, great. Either way, you win!

Tell the staffing agency that you already applied at the company (before they told you not to) so it was miscommunication or something. I came to my job one on one (here) - interviewed and they said they wanted me. BUT they use staffing agencies for every employee. So after I came here, they sent me to the staffing agency too which I am still with - hopefully not for long. It sucks for the employees. Are you in Florida by any chance?? I tell people how it is almsot impossible around here to get a job w/o going through one and they don't understand. Anyway, good luck.

Depending on the area of study, degree taken, and current area you live in, $35K might be a proper number, but without that info, I don't know. I went through a corporate recruiter for my current job, but they found me, I didn't find them. My resume was posted on Workopolis and Monster and it was found through that. I'd recommend you'd be best to look up agencies with the Better Business Bureau before you apply to an agency. I did that, and they found me some great temp work that allowed me to keep eating while I looked for a full time job. I simply worked these little jobs for $14 - $16/hr until my full time job came along. When it did, I essentially started the full time job after my contract ended and ran with my new job. Because you need a job right now, I'd recommend taking one of these little jobs simply to make the money while you continue to search for your ideal job.

No, if they call you for an interview and mention it, then explain what happened. If they don't ask - let it be. The staffing agency just wants you to use them so that they will get their money. If you get the job on your own - they get nothing.

Keep looking. You don't owe them anything. They claim they are looking out for you - but really you are the only person that can take care of yourself.

Good Luck!!!

It's only bad for the staffing agency. I wouldn't say a thing and keep fingers crossed that one of them calls you.

If you applied directly to the company call them or visit them to follow up with your application. that way they have a face and or voice to put with what would just be one of the many applications they receive every day.

Since you weren't even aware of the job being the same one, you did nothing wrong. Wait a few days then call them both, ask if they got your resume yet. It sometimes takes lots of patience and waiting to find something.

You just have to wait for a call. Overdoing it can't hurt!

If there was a number with the ad or on the website, you can follow up with them. Otherwise, it's just a waiting game.
