I'm a man whose best friend is a woman, but I wouldn't want to make out with her, even though in my own way I love her. The reason for that is simple: I can either have her as a gf and it last a few days / weeks and then lose her forever or else I can have her as my best friend for years to come. Since I do not want to lose her friendship, then the risk far outweighs any benefits I would gain.
Perhaps your situation is different, but make sure that it is what both of you want because that is the only way your relationship will survive. Some people have answered their best friends are their husbands / wives / gf / bf and thats great. But don't assume thats how it will always turn out.
Don't throw away a good friendship on an impulse.
