You will be asked to remove the bottom half of you clothing and to lie on the examination couch. The examiner should ask you if you would like a chaperone (and this should be mandatory if they are a man). You will be asked to pull your legs up so the knees are bent and your feet are on the bed, and to let you knees fall open to the bed.
The examiner will then inspect the outside genetalia with a lamp. They will then insert a speculum into the vagina (this may feel cold but they should warn you first) to open it up and let them visualise the cervix and some of the vaginal walls.
Any swabs that need to be taken at this point are done with the speculum inserted.
After that, the speculum is removed. The examiner will then place two gloved fingers into the vagina. A further hand is placed on the lower abdomen. They will try to feel for any masses or tenderness felt between the two hands. This part might be uncomfotable but you should say if it is too much.

The examination is then over and you will be thanked and asked to dress again.

You can then ask any further questions you want to.

The dignity and privacy of each patient is very strictly maintaned throughout the examination.

Expect it to be something you just have to do, but will never want to do. It is one of those necessary evils. Tell your practitioner that it is your first one and he/she will explain it to you. All women have to go through it, but it isn't the worst thing in the world. Just don't think of it as a violation, but as something that has to be done to protect your health. It is all about your attitude. If the practioner makes you feel uncomfortable, get a different one to do your exam next time. When you find someone that makes you feel at ease, stick with them for your yearly exam.

PAPs are so important because the only cure for cancer right now is prevention.

Take care.

You will probably get naked and put on a medical gown. Your doctor will use a metal tool called a speculum to gently open the vagina and take a sample off your cervix. My doctor keeps them in a warming drawer so they are not so cold. It just feels like a little pressure, no pain. It goes pretty quick. Nothing to worry about.

they aren't fun first of all. you'll be in the room with the dr and possibly a nurse. they will put you in stirrups (laying on your back with your feet on these little extensions that look like the thing you put your foot on in the shoe store and legs spread wide) they will generally have a light on you as well to help see. they will use different instruments and put them in your vagina. it is slightly uncomfortable, and can be slightly painful. i usually find something to look at on the ceiling and focus on it till it is over with. and i prefer male doctors over female so i do request that. but i would recommend what you'd be comfortable with the dr too, decide if you'd rather have a man or woman down there and ask to be scheduled with whichever accordingly.

You'll have to spread your legs and the doc will put two fingers in and feel around deep in your vagina, while pushing down on your stomach. It's embarrasing, but not the worst thing I've ever felt.

To be embarassed in a most personal way. To feel someones hands touch you in a way that will make you feel used, abused and flushed.
