A good combination is the best answer. You need light on them, and I wouldn't use sunlight because it may warm the water too much, especially in the summer. And you should have some plants in the aquarium or container you're keeping your betas in so there will be some shade and habitat for them to hang around under.

Your betta just may like it a bit darker. Each betta is different. My boy is in a 10 gallon tank and I have two 10 watt CF bulbs that lights up the tank for 11 hours a day and he's fine with it. In fact, he's more active with a light over his tank then he was when it was darker.

Direct light probably isn't the very best, mainly because it causes a lot of algae to grow and the water will get dirty and green really fast. Dark places aren't a good choice either. Mine lives on a table next to a window (not in front of it) where he gets plenty of indirect light and natural darkness at night as well.

Medium Light - Regular Room Light.
Don't put them in the sun, it'll heat up the water. Also, algae will grow like wild when in the sun.
If it's too dark your fish will start looking pale and sickly.
Have fun.

Keep in a medium light room. If you leave them in the sun it heats up the water which can harm your fish. Also lots of sun makes alge grow. If you put your fish in the dark it will slowly but surley get weaker and weaker. So just keep them in a medium lit room.

P.S Ive had 9 fish

Their natural habitat is usually dark and small... but they can be in the light... just not direct sunlight, it will make the water warm and encourage the growth of things in the water like algae.

Never put them in direct sunlight... I have a lamp over mine that I use during the day, but I have lots of fake and artificial plants that they can hide under when they feel the need. I really love my betas! Have fun with yours!
