Joni Mitchell was one of my favorites in the 70s and 80s. This song Big Yellow Taxi, is from the late 60s, maybe 68. It has been redone by many people including Amy Grant. Its very powerful lyrically. They don't write songs like this anymore!
She started out as a folkie (this song is representative), went pop with Court And Spark, and eventually got heavily into jazz (using Pat Metheny, Larry Carlton, and Jaco Pastorious as band members and doing songs by and tributes to Charlie Mingus). Then she went back into pop. Shes still alive and well!

Don't know who you are referring to when you talk about dying, but the song is Big Yellow Taxi, written and first recorded by Joni Mitchell. It has been done many times by other artists.

It sounds like you are thinking of Joni Mitchell and Big Yellow Taxi, but I don't think she died recently...
