While acknowledging the debate around the safety of mobile phone (cellphone) radiation and the fact that there is no agreement. I wonder is there a similar debate around having a bluetooth device attached to ones head? If so, what is the consensus

Well, there is a simple thing to say...electro-magentic waves generated from any electronic device causes disturbance to the human body functionality (either brain, or other body organs).

The bluetooth device carries 2 types of waves:
- electro-magnetic waves generated from the battery;
- radio waves used for inter-communication between the device and the cellphone.

Normal wired handfree kit also transers electro-magnetic waves through the wires to be able to transmit sound.

The good thing about bluetooth handfree kit is that you are not fully exposed to the cellular side-effects -- that's if the mobile is distant from you, but if the mobile is in your pocket, bad, or even belt, then, you are exposed to the cellular and the handfree side-effect...

square law: you double the distance between you and the source, and you divide the radiation by 4. Again, if you can halve the range of the device, then all things being equal, you quarter the power of it.

So mobile phones have to reach a few kilometres. Bluetooth devices have a range of no more than ten metres. So that's a factor of maybe 500 in range, so a factor of 250,000 in power. All things being equal.

There's more to if than that. But basically, short range devices are total wusses compared to mobile phones. No problem.

I always have felt that it must give more off more radiation than just having the cell phone to your ear. I have no scientific evidence to back that up, but it just seems logical to me. I mean, most people who use these things keep them in their ears for a very long time, even if they are on the phone or not. And that light is always blinking. Who knows...I don't own one, yet. But they do seem very convenient and much easier to deal with than those big bulky headsets with wires.

Bluetooth is fine, just like anything else in this world there will always the few who will misuse it for their sordid purposes.
