Lothar Mathaus, because, like stanley matthews in england, he was still playing at the very highest standard at forty, what a hero.

1. Franz Beckenbauer
2. Fritz Walter
3. Gerd Muller
=. Paul Breitner
5. Sepp Maier
=. Karl-Heinz Rummenige
7. Dieter Muller
8. Jurgen Klinnsmann
9. Horst Hrubesch
10. Oliver Kahn
11. Jens Lehman
12. Heinz Flohe

All of above list is based on my memories of WC 1978, EC 1980 upto now. And what I have read, watched of other tournaments.

Effenberg, Andreas Moller, Augenthaler, Rudi Voller and Matthaus I have left out because of bad sportmanship. If you cannot behave on the pitch you're not worth a place in this list.

Karl Heinz Rummenigge - I remember being petrified of him in the 1982 European cup final, he had been European player of the year 3 times on the trot and my team Aston Villa had to try to keep him quiet, he ran the show for Bayern and god knows how they never stuffed us, but he was the best player in a team which in the late 70s and early 80s were definately the dominant European force, excluding English teams that is. Truly great player.

To me the greatest and the best german player of all time is LOTHAR MATTHAEUS.He was certainly one of the best defensive midfielders of the world. He did a great job in man marking maradona and got them the cup.
